Aiming- at Spring Training

Spring Training- whether it’s palm trees and Atlantic breezes, or cactus and desert air, spring training is the awakening of the baseball athlete as he approaches another challenging season.

Athletes no longer involved in the professional season- and that’s every-pro outside of 50 still playing in the Fall Classic- should be looking ahead to 2010.  For the conditioning coach- the time is right to engage goals for 2010, and establish the baselines that the athlete will require to achieve excellence.
Active Recovery and base building- its time to build endurance- and also to overcome the imbalances that built up in ’09.  Have you screened your players?  Maybe it’s time to retake the overhead and one legged squat assessments- in conjunction with metabolic assessments.
When the strength phase begins- its time to understand the needs – as relative to the force couples applied at the joint level- that’s ankle- knee-hip-wrist-elbow…and of course- the shoulder. Core strength and endurance is highlighted in this phase also.
Finally- how are you going to approach power training?  Will it be typically- all concentric motions and speed?  Maybe it’s time to rethink your approach here- and understand movement deceleration and look at the final two weeks of a strength phase for this incorporation.
The body will only produce as much force- as it has the ability to control.
As a modern strength and conditioning coach- you have to be an observer of the game- not a spectator.  Look at the movement process for the individual- understand the volume requirements and systematically design a program- targeting their goals for improvement.
They’ll measure your success when spring rolls around.
